Not only is Triumph Motorcycle Ltd. the largest British motorcycle manufacturer, it also has a powerful history. The company started making their motorcycles in Coventry under the name Triumph Engineering Co Ltd in 1902. Despite assembling their motorcycles with a Belgium Minerva engine, Triumph rapidly sold 500 units in a single year. Driven by their success, Triumph started designing their own motorcycles based on their competitor's models in 1904. By 1905, the company's first motorcycle fully designed and produced in house rolled out of the factory. The beginning of World War I was the next big step in the company's evolution. Triumph was the Allied manufacturer of motorcycles and by the end of the war they had produced more than 30,000 machines. During the Great Depression the company experienced financial difficulties and was ultimately bought by then competitor Ariel Motorcycle Company. With the start of World War II came another big catastrophe, their Coventry plant was completely destroyed by a German raid. By the time the new plant was built in Meriden, 70% of Triumph bikes were sold in the United States. To please this lucrative market the company worked on a design suited for long distance riding. The result was a new model, the Thunderbird. This is the 1950 model that Marlon Brando rode in the movie 'The Wild One”. The ‘60s and ‘70s proved difficult for the motorcycle brand even with the success of the Bonneville model. During that time the company underwent through many mergers and changes of ownership. Triumph simply could not compete with the Japanese brands on the American market. In addition, the American government introduced a series of importation standards and measures that the company could not easily meet. In 1983, the company went bankrupt. This is when the new owner, John Bloor, bought the company and renamed it Triumph Motorcycle Ltd. The new management set to visit its competitors in Japan to import the best practices of the business. The new Triumph then set out to build a brand new top of the line plant with new prototypes featuring all the advanced technologies the old Triumph lacked. Since then, the company has not stopped its growth and has no doubt regained its former glory. Keep your Triumph looking perfect with TouchUpDirect touch up paint.
